A Brief History of Ashland, WI

Ashland played an important role in the rich history of Wisconsin. After being home to eight Native American peoples that made the Chequamegon Bay area, the location welcomed settler communities comprising European explorers, missionaries, and traders.

In 1856, the first plat of Ashland was registered. Growth soon followed, thanks to its critical role as a major port on Lake Superior. It was incorporated as a city in 1887. By the end of the 1800s, Ashland had already become one of Wisconsin’s largest cities.
