A Brief History of Mellen, WI

The community of Mellen, originally called Iron City, was established in the late 1800s as a railroad town. During its early years, it was home to the largest tannery in North America. The town was renamed Mellen in honor of William Solon Mellen, the general manager of the Wisconsin Central Railroad who built the community’s first school on West Street.

In more recent years, Mellen was recognized as Wisconsin's first "Trail Town '' due to its location along the North Country Trail providing a way stop for trail hikers.
